How life is lived here

A Caribbean island under U.S. law and the U.S. dollar, with a rainforest, five centuries of history, championship golf, and marinas for superyachts, most of it within an hour of the capital.

01 · On the water

A slip for the boat, minutes from home.

The east coast is Puerto Rico's boating country. Fajardo alone has more than five marinas, and Puerto del Rey, widely described as the Caribbean's largest, lists more than 900 wet slips for vessels up to 200 feet. In Palmas del Mar, The Yacht Club Marina takes yachts up to 175 feet.

From there, Culebra, Vieques, and the cays offshore are an easy run for a weekend.

Courses by the names that built the game.

Robert Trent Jones Sr. laid out the first holes at Dorado Beach in 1958. His son designed Bahía Beach. Rees Jones and Gary Player designed the two courses at Palmas del Mar, Tom and George Fazio and Greg Norman the two at Río Mar, and Tom Kite the 27 holes at Grand Reserve.

03 · The old city

Five centuries, walkable.

Old San Juan took its name in 1521. Its forts and walls form Puerto Rico's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1983, and La Fortaleza, built from 1533, is still the governor's residence. Restaurants, galleries, and the cathedral are a walk from restored colonial townhouses.

Condado and Miramar, a few minutes east, add oceanfront towers and lagoon views.

04 · The rainforest

The only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System.

El Yunque covers about 28,434 acres of the Luquillo mountains east of San Juan. Bahía Beach and Río Mar sit at its foot, so a morning hike and an afternoon on the beach happen on the same day.

05 · Beaches and bays

Calm coves, open surf, and light in the water.

Laguna Grande in Fajardo is one of the island's three bioluminescent bays, visited at night by kayak inside the Las Cabezas de San Juan reserve. Seven Seas is Fajardo's calm beach. In the city, the Condado Lagoon is home to the Antillean manatee.

06 · The west coast

Surf, whales, and the longest sunsets.

Rincón hosted the World Surfing Championships in 1968. Each winter the big swells and the humpback whales arrive together, and the Tres Palmas Marine Reserve protects the reef offshore.
